Mastermind Limited Monster Magnet

Mastermind Limited Monster Magnet

Described as a “mind-expansion team” by The New York Times, New Jersey’s MONSTER MAGNET is hands down one of the most explosive and stimulating U.S. rock bands of the last two decades. Which brings us full circle to the approaching record, MASTERMIND. Saying that the album is a “return to form” would be a severe understatement; songs such as the firstborn single “Gods and Punks” and “100 Million Miles” are amidst the catchiest and heaviest hitting tracks in MONSTER MAGNET’s storied catalog. Album art by INVISIBLE CREATURE. 2 BONUS TRACKS!!!

4Pretty darn great!
By Alex Nennig
I love Monster Magnet. They systematically put out great rock n roll, and while galore fans may quibble with regards to the last few albums being uneven or subpar (I thought they were all good stuff), most seem to agree that “Mastermind” is a fine return to form. I never in truth thought that Monster Magnet had ever lost it is form, as their sound unquestionably bears a signature that one hears on all their albums, but I do agree that this is a outstanding album.

They are a band that has always been a big old mix of outstanding rock influences, altho the three most apparent have always been Black Sabbath, Hawkwind, and the Stooges. Some albums lean more towards one of those three than the others. While “Dopes” was their album most like Hawkwind and “Powertrip” carried a strong (and super awesome) Stooges sound with it, one listen to the begin “Hallucination Bomb” and you’ll be sure to agree this is their most Black Sabbath sounding album yet. The added layer of gloom is a nice touch, while Monster Magnet has always been capable of massive, lumbering Sabbath grooves, not one thing in their catalog has sounded this doomy before. I like it.

“Mastermind” also seems to be a very stripped down release too, more down to world than even “Powertrip,” so don’t suppose lots of the spacey, psychedelic effects found on former albums, this album isn’t in truth riding on that vibe as much.

But thats hardly something to complain regarding when the music is this good. Except for the last couple of tracks, this is a very solid album, and one Dave and the rest Monster Magnet will have to be proud of.

4Vinyl Review
By Christcc
I hate when I’m buying a vinyl and check reviews and Amazon just links it with the CD’s. So I’m not goin to review the music in truth here. It is the best album since “Powertrip”. It is not “Powertrip” though. It not their best work but it is very damn good. It’s a little more robust but not too much to loose the feel of good ole classic stoner rock. My views on the album are finelooking much the same as everyone else and I am not going to waste my and your time attempting to find a new a flashy way to say what has already been done. So the the meat and potatoes. The album is a double LP on white, thick vinyl. Like the fixed edition cd, the LP has the two extra tracks on it “Fuzz Pig” (which sounds similar to ‘Freak Shop USA’) and “Watch Me Fade”. It has with regards to 3 to 4 songs amongst sides a-d. The sound quality is excellent. I have this on digital, cd, and vinyl and vinyl (like it will have to be) is by far the best. If you are looking for something portable, it comes with a copy of the cd so that increments the value. Personal note that Amazon won’t tell you, and them as a business I got it, but me as a fan that is supporting the band, for 25$ and for a LIMITED time you may get all this, plus have it autographed by Dave himself. They remove (for me) the top right of the shrink wrap and Dave scribbles his John Handcock on the jacket. The vinyl is still technically sealed because you may not reach the vinyl from the little shrink wrap that is removed. For a fan, it is a cool extra for not one thing more. BUT, it is offered only when ordering from the band’s website. IF you are looking for great music, pick up this LP. If you are looking for outstanding music and purchased the cd, well get a turntable, buy the LP and give away the extra copy of the cd you have to a non fan and win a great deal of more support!

4Nice comeback
By Jason M Loft
It’s always stimulating when these kids release something new. It’s not Dopes to Infinity or Superjudge but it’s unfair to suppose it to be. They were recorded 15 years ago and no bands may proceed to write albums like that over such a long period.

Mastermind is rather good. It’s nice to listen that Dave Wyndorf still has it and that this awful band still has something to say.
