What’s everyone complaining about? I LIKE it!

My 5 and 7 year old daughters perfectly love playing this game — there is not much instructional value, but what’s wrong with Imagination, family members interacting, friendly contest and playing with cute little polly pocket dolls??? That is JUST AS IMPORTANT as what most would call “educational.” (and may you believe that parent’s review that says she’s disturb with regards to the SUV?? give me a break and relax a little!)

As others have said, you move your Polly to each “store” on the board, draw a card, and if the suitable piece of costume is there, you may dress your polly with it and move on. What’s wrong with that? It’s fun, my girls get enjoyment from it, and we play and laugh together — I feel like waking them up now so we may play a late night game of Fashion Beach — they’d love it! Play it with your kids, receive pleasure from their company and innosence and don’t worry that the paper picture of an SUV is going to corrupt their morals!!

Polly Pocket game fun for daughter

My daughter got this when she was 4 (or just before turning 4). She enjoyed it right away and over a year and half later, she still loves playing it. I think playing games in and of itself is an education experience…at this age, learning to take turns and receive loss is important. And this works on memory attainments as she remunerate attention when I flip over one of her costume cards so she may go and retrieve it at her earliest opportunity. Some of the directions were a bit lacking, but we made numerous things up along the way (like whether the Pollys may go in either direction at all times, whether you remove the card that lets you pick any item after using it or whether you keep it in that store for an individual else to use, etc.) We surely have fun with it..it’s a game that finelooking much only mommy and daughter play. We have conversations with the Pollys along the way too. It’s fun and I don’t mind playing it once or twice a day. My daughter has been into board games since before turning 3 which is dissimilar than her friends so I don’t know if that has any effect on her liking this game more than galore other kids. We likewise LOVE playing Monopoly Jr (Princess version), Candyland, Disney Yahtzee Jr, Chutes & Ladders, Strawberryland, UNO, Go Fish, and Tic Tac Toe.

HISTORY: Matryoshkas date from 1890. Good for the most part…

Ordered five of these.
They arrived within the scheduled deliverance time and came in good condition as stated. My only complaint is that I didn’t receive a big variety. I got closely the same ten cards in each set. Not sure if the vendor was selective in what they sent or if it was my exceptionally bad or displeasing luck. The cards themselves were still decent and as I said before are in outstanding condition.

A outstanding buy to boost your collections numbers but don’t take the gamble if you’re wanting something specific.

Great Basic Zoo with loads of play potential

As the other reviewers noted, this is a sturdy set. I purchased it a while back for my baby, who shall be two in late December. This isn’t her favored set (Winnie the Pooh still holds that record), but she does receive pleasure from the animals, and she perfectly adores the car (definitely the favored item in the set). She’s still not much of a builder, but when I (or my husband) take the initiative and begin taking out pieces to build things, she quickly toddles over to imitate to the best of her abilities. She at times has troubles assembling the legos, but at her age, it is to be expected. Still, the bright colors of the legos (and exuberance from the family) keep her attempting until she succeeds at “connecting” one-three pieces. She’s not building zoos, at present, but taking into account that these Duplos are significantly littler than the Megablox set that she has become rather proficient with, I’m pleased that she’s getting challenged. An added bonus is that her huge sister (7), who was NEVER into building toys, has at last determined that building with legos may be just as fun as playing barbies, doing science experiments, or reading, etc. Now she, too, plays with legos (but those aimed at larger kids).

Like the other Duplo sets that I have purchased, this is of particular lasting quality (quality that far surpasses what I have seen/experienced from the Megablox, but that is subjective), and may be effortlessly washed in the top rack of the dishwasher, ought to it be necessary to clean them. As for the toy’s instructional value, my little one is learning the names of and sounds that a few animals make (while giggling hysterically), and she’s doing basic construction (though she alternatively chooses to take isolated what others in the family have assembled). She likes to wander off with the animals, so they wind up near her animal puzzles, permitting her to see/notice deviations amid two dimensional and three dimensional objects, and the Duplo zoo animals are on occasion used by her when she’s playing with her blocks, which leads me to think of the statuettes and the car in this set as not fixed to the world of legos–they are being mixed by her own associations/whims with her other toys. Again though, the winning piece of this set is the car: it gets the most use by far, and she attempts to place her characters from a great deal of of the other Duplo sets inside. This (since the seat of the car has lego grooves, and the statuettes have their own attachments) grant her to work at somewhat intricate fine motor skills. It’s easy sufficient for me to lock a figurine into a car, but for her it takes time and effort, which just goes to show how arousing and attention holding the car and it is workings are for her. For a little one, and they do tend to be without apparent effort distracted, this one object/skill action in truth retains her attention: perhaps she relates to the car because it is share of her real life, but who knows.

I would surely buy this set for another child, but I would choose it for a child ABOVE age two, just as the box recommends rather than for one who is 18-20 months old. Still, a outstanding buy with loads of play value: I believe my little one will find this zoo growingly interesting as her imagination and motor skill abilities flourish. So, I am pleased!

Hours of fun!

I loved duplos as a kid and just purchased this set for my 18 month old. She loves it! We may in a literal sense spend hours together playing with this set, building dissimilar things and learning the animal sounds. She loves to talk to the animals and carry them around with her. My duplos are still in great shape so I know this will last forever!

Save your money

Save your money, folks. My ten-year-old son begged for this for Christmas and was so disappointed. The pieces do not fit together well and are constantly falling apart. (The directions actually suggest keeping one piece together with Scotch tape.) Not what you want when gathering bugs or raising triops! This will be bits and pieces on the closet floor by the weekend.

Great idea that doesn’t work.

Please don’t buy this product. I purchased it thinking that the other two reviews will have to have done something faulty for the duration of set up or may have been overly critical. That’s not the case, they are exact reviews of this product. All the parts connect by the use of pressure points which is terrible in design, any modify of pressure on any of the surfaces will cause it to implode. My wife and I purchased this for our own entertainment, we figured we could watch a frog go through it is stages etc. When you get this product you realize that in order to get a frog in the unit you must introductory catch one, there is no setup for tadpoles. The aquarium is adjacent to the rainforest habitat(frog habitat). If you need to clean the aquarium you ought to remove one of the walls to the rainforest habitat leaving to suggestion what may occur to the creatures that you have placed inside there. The ant hill is a plastic dome of green plastic inside a plastic dome of clear plastic. I may only imagine what would take place if I place sand on top of a plastic dome, I am positive gravity will take it is course and the only anthill I will have is the ants attempting to eat the frog on the rainforest habitat. Simply put, don’t buy this, trust me!

Don’t Waste Your Money!!

Do not waste your money. It is VERY cheaply made. Pieces do not fit together well. Designed very poorly. Falls altogether appart when you scarcely touch it. DO NOT BUY! We are returning ours. Thank God I have the reciept. The part that angers me the most is that this is actually a product that is NOT made in China! Piece of crap.

Men Become Tools of Their Tools

Marx’s book is roughly 50 years old now, but it still sparkles with clear or deep perception into the myth and symbol discourse surrounding America’s feeling of satisfaction of the 18th century idea of the “Garden of the World,” a new Eden that would redeem mankind. Starting with “The Tempest” as reflective of the West’s view of the geographic invention of “primitive” and “unspoiled” lands, and moving through Hawthorne, Emerson, Thoreau, Melville, Twain, to Fitzgerald “The Great Gatsby” as an exemplification of how the simple”pastoralism” of the Enlightenment (based on the Virgillian pastoral form), Marx shows how the American artists and writers tardily came to grips with the penetration of the machine into the garden. The Conflict amid Pastoralism and Industrialization

In writing this review I am attempting not to duplicate the magnificent review by panopticonman below. Thus, I would refer all readers of this review to that review.

Marx’s thesis, roughly stated, is that: Americans used idea’s devised when it comes to landscape in the old world to the landscape they encountered in the new world. In doing so, the landscape became a “repository of value” (value meaning economic, spiritual, etc.). The main idea regarding the landscape that travelled with them from Europe was the idea of “pastoralism”.

Pastorialism, roughly expressed, represents the yearning by civilised man to occupy the space in among “art” and “nature”. Marx does an magnificent occupation of explaining the pre-modern understanding of “art” (which is dissimilar then our innovative understanding of the word). Marx likewise distinguishes the a “simple” conception of pastoralism with a “complex” conception. Using the writings of Jefferson, Marx argues that Americans were more comfortable with the idea of a “complex” pastoralism that acknowledged the conflict inherent in the occupation of a “middle landscape” amidst art and nature.
Marx then attaches the conception of pastoralism to the symbol of the “garden” as representing a mediating space among art and nature (apply “arts” to “nature” and create a garden).

Perhaps the most interesting percentage of the book comes when Marx discusses the amount of time when a lot of saw NO conflict amidst the “machine” and the “garden”.

However, the tour de strength comes when Marx analyzes this conflict as it appears in the works of Emerson, Thoureau, Hawthorne, Melville and Fitzgerald.

Personally, I thought the analysis of Hawthorne’s “Ethan Brand” was primary rate.

Marx concludes by congratulating the writers he uses for “clarifying” the circumstance of Americans and noting that the extreme solution of the problem of the machine in the garden is not for writer’s but for politicans.

In this way, the book is significantly more political then one might expect. It genuinely belongs to the genre of “American Studies”, even even though my 1970′s edition refers to it as belonging to “Literature”.

Marx achieves greatness by tenaciously explpicating the bothered kinship among America and it is technology. Although written in 1964, this book retains outstanding relevance.

I highly commend “The Machine in the Garden”.

I may relate to this book

The pastoral effigy is alive and well, surely in my mind anyway!

As an airline pilot observing the land under I often times mused, once in a while in speech with my fellow crewmembers, what it would be like to fly over the landscape as it existed in an earlier time. Of course, I would still want to be comfortably ensconced in my aluminum cocoon, capable to zip thither and yon for whatsoever my allotted time. Today Hawthorne’s peace in “Sleepy Hollow” is more likely to be disrupted by the “long shriek, harsh, above all other harshness…[that] the space of a mile can not mollify it into harmony” of a jet engine than the whistle of a locomotive.

Leo Marx very capably traces the origin of the literary idealisti of the “garden” and pinpoints it is contradictory significances through the literary creations of a great deal of of America’s greatest writers. At it is core is the contrast among two worlds, that of rural peace and simplicity or urban sophistication and power. The shriek of the locomotive whistle is a metaphor for industrial power.

Shakespeare’s “The Tempast,” provides a recurring theme “of a redemptive journeying away from society in the direction of nature,” but the pastoral design circumscribes the pastoral ideal, and is consequently out of reach. Nonetheless the effigy of a pastoral retreat is so believable that it closely seems a possibility. Marx goes on to explains how the pastoral idealisti is altered by American writers to New World circumstances.

But, Robert Beverley in the “History and Present State of Virginia” confuses the two significations of “garden.” One results from man’s improvements, the bounty of the land; the other is the language of myth.

This kinship amid nature and man is apparent in Jefferson’s agrarian idealisti in “Notes on Virginia.” But Marx highlights Jefferson’s paradoxical view toward industry. To Jefferson the machine was a “token of the liberation of the humane spirit.”(150) His imaginativeness of the machine was while it was at work, blending in harmonious with the countryside, not the factory scheme which became the manifestation of technical progress. Jefferson’s quandary, as Marx observes, was that “to put the pastoral theory of America into effect it would be necessary at some point…to legislate versus the creation of a system of manufactures. But to curb economic development in turn would require precisely the kind of government power Jefferson detested.”(134)

Opposing Jefferson’s rural agrarian ideal, Alexander Hamilton was “an undisguised advocate of continuing economic development.”(167) The “Report on the Subject of Manufactures,” which Hamilton staged to Congress, articulated a dissimilar attitude toward manufactures. Marx, understandably, does not spend much space talking about Hamilton, since his ideas were so much at odds with Marx’s thesis of pastoral idealism.

Marx concludes the machine’s increasing dominance precludes the possibleness of pastoral salvation and a new “symbol of possibility” is needed. Until then the machine remains in the garden, except as an effigy in my mind, of a land that no longer exists!
