Quick Knitting Holiday Project Round Up

50 yards

*Knit a Super Bulky Handspun Yarn in to a quick scarf on big needles, like size 17′s by casting on 5 or 6 stitches and knitting each row. Finish with fringe in a thinner yarn or leave the ends plain. If you are up for a more or less more adventurous scarf, try the drop stitch scarf.

*Make a cowl or neckwarmer from bulky or super bulky yarn (or thinner yarn and use a lace pattern). Make in a thick on thin or in truth textural yarn:

Cast on 16 stitches and knitting each row until the scarflette is long sufficient to go around your neck. Secure with buttons that may be pushed through the knitted fabric- with this thick or yarn, no need to make buttonholes.

*Super bulky pixie hat- on huge double pointed needles- say a size 15, cast on 8 stitches. Join in the round, knit 1 round. Divide on to 4 double pointed needles. Increase one stitch at end of each double pointed needle until hat is huge sufficient to fit around your head or 46 stitches. Knit around until hat is long sufficient or until you are closely out of yarn, Bind off loosely. Use a Super Bulky Yarn- 2-3 stitches/inch

Quick variations: on the last rows work Knit 1 row Purl 1 row various times or ribbing or seed stitch to prevent curling.

100 Yards

*French Press cozies need only with regards to 100 yards of bulky yarn. Make them like a top down hat by cast on 8 stitches and increasing each other row 6 or 8 stitches until it is wide enough. Or cast on 16 stitches to start out to leave an opening at the top for the plunger. There is a pattern (pdf from Hello Yarn) here.

*Cowl/neckwarmer that fits over the head-this is specially fun in thick and thin or very textural yarns. On a pair of size 17 circular 16 inch needles for a gauge of 2 stitches/inch. Cast on 51 stitches, join in the round being careful not to twist. Work *K1P1* around for seed stitch until you are almost out of yarn, Bind off. For a more closely fitting cowl cast on less stitches or undertake ribbing to draw it in.

*Ribbed Hat- Use a bulky yarn, you will need 70 yards or so of handspun, 100 yards if you want a longer hat or a folded up brim.

Cast on 56 stitches on a size 11 16 inch circular needle. Work Knit 2 Purl 2 rib for 6 inches. Decrease as follows, altering to double points when the hat gets too little around for the circular needle:

*Knit 2, Purl 2, Knit 2, Purl 2 together* around. work 1 row

*Knit 2 Purl 2 togheter, Knit 2, Purl 1* around. work 1 row

*Knit 2, Purl 1, Knit to together, Purl 1* around. Work 1 row.

*Knit 2 together, Purl 1, Knit 1, Purl 1* around. Work 1 row.

*Knit 2 together Knit 1, Purl 1* around

*Knit 2 together, Purl 1* around.

*Knit 2 together around*, break yarn and pull through remaining stitches.
